5 Reasons A Couple Should Move

We've Moved to KansasThere’s no place like home, especially a home in Kansas!

At the beginning of the month, the Mr. and I packed our clothes into duffel bags and headed south–well, southwest. We woke up at 4 am and took the eight hour drive caravan style. With Taylor Swift cranked, I chugged coffee and spritzed myself with water to stay awake. When our eyes still were heavy, we pulled into a random church parking lot and cat-napped together scrunched up in the cab of truck. When we arrived, we dropped our luggage in our temporary home and napped through dinner.

It’s been crazy, but I wouldn’t change a second of it.

1.Β Bonding Experience

There’s nothing like moving to a new city and then figuring out there’s none of the grocery stores you’re used to. Grocery stores around here are called funny things like Price Chopper and Hen House. Exploring new grocery stores turned into mini dates for us, finding new local products and comparing prices. Plus, there’s nothing like sneaking kisses in the middle of the laundry detergent aisle!

2. Moving reveals what’s important

What do you bring? What do you leave? You will learn so much about your and your spouse’s priorities by looking at the stuff you’ve packed into your U-haul. For us, we are trying to minimize our lifestyle, but we still brought some personal items. I brought a box full of my favorite books and my plant collection. The Mr. brought aΒ box of computer equipment and his toolboxes in case the cars needed fixing.Β I’d say his personal items are probably more helpful to us as a couple than my plants.Β πŸ˜†

3. Get rid of extra junk

Does it fit in your car/truck/new apartment? No? Throw it out. Recycle it. Donate it. This is your chance to get rid of all that useless stuff that collects when you have stayed in one place too long. Use the Konmari Method to get rid of things that won’t contribute to the new life you are building together in this new place.

4. New experiences

One of the most enjoyable parts of moving has been finding new places to explore. New parks, new museums, new libraries! It’s all an adventure.

5. Grow Your Couple’s Instincts

Sometimes you just don’t remember which way you were supposed to turn to get back home. And your phone is dead as well. Living in a new city makes you rely on your instincts. But have you ever used your couple’s instincts? This is when you and your spouse agree on the best way to move forward together. When you are in a new place together, there’s a good chance you won’t have friends and family nearby to rely on. Being alone together makes you rely on one another in a completely different way. You can’t recreate that.Β πŸ–€

Moving makes you rely on one another, learn what’s important, experience new things, get rid of all your junk, and in the end bond together as a stronger couple than ever.
