Throw out your soap! Here’s the dish on the oil cleansing method.
I know what you’re thinking-putting oil on your face seems like the worst thing for it. But the oil we are talking about is different than the one you get on your face after eating McDonalds. Oils like sweet almond oil, olive oil, and coconut oil actually dissolve dirt and grease, leaving your face moisturized and less oily than before.
Oil cleansing works on both dry and oily skin! When your face is getting the proper moisture it needs, it won’t overproduce oils throughout the day. Plus, it’s great for acne.
Acne creams especially tend to work by drying out the skin, but oil cleaning provides vitamins, antioxidants, and nourishing nutrients that leave the skin with a proper PH balance.
How to Oil Cleanse
Start by steaming your face. You can do this daily in the shower or just with a hot, damp washcloth. Massage your oil into your skin with your fingertips. Use light pressure. You won’t need to scrub; even waterproof makeup will be dissolved. After the oil has soaked in for about 30 seconds, wipe off with a warm, wet washcloth.
Your face will feel moisturized and you won’t need to apply any additional lotions or potions to your face when you are done! We still use sunscreen when we plan to be outside, but some oils even have up to 30 spf so you’re covered there too.

The most common oils used are almond oil, olive oil, and coconut oil. I use a combination that I have found that works best for the most skin types and uses inexpensive oils. Everyone has their own preferences, so if this doesn’t work for you, feel free to check out some of the other links below!
- 1/3 bottle sweet almond oil (moisturizing)
- 1/3 bottle castor oil (cleansing)
- 2 droppers full of tamanu oil (heals scarring and anti-aging)
- 10 drops of Tea Tree Oil (benefits acne and encourages clear skin)
For storage, I use these pretty cobalt blue glass dropper from the Vitamin Shoppe. These are best because they keep sunlight from spoiling the mixture.
Optional: Add a vitamin serum like this one from My Organic Zone.

Typically, skin has an adjustment period to the oil cleansing method so give it some time before you decide if it’s right for you. It takes about a month for your face to get used to not having chemicals used on it every day! Do you oil cleanse?
